Ian Cumberland - Still: Gormleys Belfast

Acclaimed for his complex and insightful pieces, Ian has unveiled a series which reflects a necessary shift in perspective after becoming a father.

Cumberland is typically known for his complex pieces, which often contain audio-visual elements as well as deep symbolism and societal critique.

In contrast, Still is a visually vibrant series featuring colourful vases of flowers, which are deceptively simple at first glance.

“We have a daughter who is now one year old, and while I took a break initially, the flowers were my way of keeping my creative streak alive,” said Cumberland.

“This series is typified by the concept of downtime – even in terms of naming the pieces, individually the pieces carry the name of the series, Still, and a number, and this was very intentional on my part.

“Typically, I give a lot of thought and effort into props, concepts and set designs for my pieces, but this series suits the point I am at in my life. 

“I was primarily inspired by a fashion editorial I saw years ago, where the models were placed among beautiful flower arrangements.“While the pieces seem straightforward, the flowers are more abstract and impressionistic than they look at first glance.

“In this series, I favour exhibiting the process and concept in these pieces ahead of a one-to-one likeness that a first look might impress. “The Still series has been a nice change and was very appropriate for this moment of new fatherhood.”

Cumberland studied fine art at Ulster University, and since graduating in 2006 with a First Class Honours degree, has gone on to exhibit his work both nationally and internationally, in cities such as London, Edinburgh, New York and Boston, as well as Belfast and Dublin. He has also achieved several accolades for his work, the most significant of which was the Davy Portrait Award in 2010.
